Lineman Jobs in West Virginia

What are linemen?

Power lines are an important part of our everyday lives. They enable us to have heating and cooling, lighting, working appliances, and more. As communities grow and residential, retail and commercial buildings increase demand for electricity, linemen are needed to get power lines up and running. Linemen are responsible for installing power lines as well as repairing or replacing them when they’re not working properly.

Importance of linemen jobs in West Virginia

By installing and maintaining power lines, each worker makes sure people have access to electricity. This impacts homes, schools, offices, retail stores, and other buildings in a community, and enables people to keep food cold in a refrigerator, watch television, pass along information, and more. When the power goes out due to storms, linemen brave inclement weather conditions to perform storm restoration and restore electricity. These jobs can be dangerous, and the professionals in this field are hard-working, dedicated individuals.

Who do linemen work for in WV?

A variety of West Virginia companies employ linemen, including telecommunications companies, energy companies, and utility companies. Power is generated at a plant and transported through wires to the meter at a person’s home, retail store, or other building; linemen may perform work anywhere along this process. Linemen may also work in urban and rural areas.

Work responsibilities

Locating & GIS

Linemen are responsible for services like installing and maintaining power lines, including electric power lines, telephone lines, and lines used in distribution systems. Duties may include inspecting and testing systems, installing updated systems, stringing wires, working on electrical boxes, setting up and climbing poles, and more. Linemen work above ground as well as dig trenches for underground wires.

Line installation services

Installing power lines is one of the services that the worker provides. These lines may be visible above the ground or hidden below the ground.

Above-ground installations

Above-ground installation includes installing poles, stringing wires or cables, and setting up other components that allow power lines to function. Linemen will also test the system to make sure everything is working.

Below-ground installations

While higher voltage wires are installed above ground, it’s sometimes preferred to place lower voltage wires underground. This is sometimes done to protect the lines from weather damage or for a more aesthetically pleasing view for residents. Wires are installed underground after trenches have been dug to house them.

Line repair and replacement services

In addition to installing power lines, linemen are responsible for fixing the power lines when they stop working properly. This can include repairing the wire or replacing it. Wires may be de-energized or live, though working with high voltage wires requires special gear.

Above-ground repairs

Linemen may climb poles to reach the power lines, or be lifted up to the lines by a cherry picker. During a power outage, it’s up to the linemen to restore power, which can mean performing storm restoration during hazardous weather conditions.

Below-ground repairs

Linemen do repair work below the ground as well, including digging to reach the wires and walking through tunnels.

Abide by safety regulations

These types of jobs can be dangerous and pose the risk of falls, shocks, and other injuries. To stay safe, linemen are required to understand the risks and follow safety protocol, which includes wearing protective gear, properly handling the wires and equipment, having an assistant nearby, and paying attention to details.
